THE ROLE OF MANAGERS IN MODERN ORGANIZATION
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1    BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY  
Organisation becomes what they are largely because of their leaders. This explains why in any organisation, there are usually individuals responsible for organizing in directing the affairs and activities of such organisation. These individuals are usually people who have the ability to lead the other people in an organisation. They are people who have the managerial ability to influence employees under them (subordinates) to work towards the realization of the goals and objectives of the organisation in order to move the organisation forwards. To this end, every organisation need dedicated, capable and trustworthy leader (manager) to be able to build the organisation without manager an organisation is but a middle of men and machine. Thus the roles of managers all over the world can be over emphasized, hence it is been noted in the recent past that any attempt to delicate on the roles of managers in any modern organisation, one must involves himself in the concept of administration and management on organisation unlike other field of study, one can not quantify in terms of derived benefits that have been or can be attended through manager of any organisation.
However, with some instrument and techniques, quantifiable personnel could be raised but this is not easy to come by through in spite of the drawback mangers and to management bodies still play an important role in the running and growth of the organisation. Infact, it is to this basis that administrations have taken a huge amount of money in the organisation budget. It therefore means that couscous and deliberate effect must be made to ensure that modern organisation and the roles of managers been administered to the door step of every well doing manager.
And if this is done, then he can meet our demand goals and objectives. It means that manager should be able to perform the following plan; communicate, orgnise, direct, coordinate, staff, control and command.
This is to achieve the set objective of the organisation. But be it as it may administration and management will be viewed in a separate concept.
1.2    STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS  
Many books have been written on the roles of managers in modern organisation in particular. But to the best of my knowledge, no systematic study on the roles of managers in Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) where my study is base on has been written.
Admittedly, the research on those work carried out in Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC). Therefore, to eliminate the pit fall involved knowing the process of the information of the role of modern manager in Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) there is the need for the study. It is hoped that at the end of this study most of this fact will be exposed and appropriate solution suggested.
1.3    objectives of the study
The objective of this work could be seen in the following ways.
To asses the roles of managers in modern organisation.
To improve the level of manpower in modern organisation.
To identify the cause of low rate of productivity by managers in the development activities and suggest possible ways of improving the ideas and contributions of managers.
To identify problems being faced by modern managers.
1.4    RESEARCH QUESTIONS  
The research questions on this very work are as follows:
How can the roles of managers in modern organisation be improved?
How can problems being faced by modern managers be identified? And over come?
How can the roles of modern managers be assessed?
What are the causes of low productivity on the roles of managers in modern organisation?
1.5    SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY    
The significance of the study in the roles of managers in modern organisation is that, it will provide awareness needed by middle managers. It will as raise practical exercise which will create the enablement of managers to integrate and apply the knowledge to the solving of problems facing administration and managers modern organisation.
It gives managers the ability to analyse and interpret empirically critically and effectively issues that deals with managers problems.
In conclusion, it is to enhance and enlighten managers and top management in modern organisation.
1.6    SCOPE OF THE STUDY  
This work will be focused on the various aspect of the roles of modern managers in modern organisation in Delta State. Our major focus would be on Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) to assess the roles and involvement of modern managers in modern organisation.
1.7    LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
This study is limited to some extent because of the following reasons;
Because of the financial constraints in the society.
Problem of transportation in Nigeria in general.
Time constrain: constrain in collecting data and information in sense that most manager are reluctant to prove information.
1.8    OPERATIONAL DEFINITION OF TERMS
Manager: A manager is one who among other thing, perform certain function. In order words is a person who head a department and coordinate the work of many individuals and that is in-charge of the responsibility of both materials and human resources to enhance the achievement of the organisation goal and objectives.   
Management: Management can be defined as the process of undertaken by one or more individuals to coordinate the activities of others to achieve results not achievable by one individual acting alone. Also management is to forecast and plan, to organise, command, coordinate and to control in order to achieve set goal or objectives.
Administrative: Administration can be defined as guidance, leading and controlling of effort of a group of individual toward attaining some goals.
Organisation: Organisation refers to composition of individual, who come together to pursue common interest or goal. Form the business perspective, a business organisation has be defined as an identifiable entity created to accomplish specific purpose. It exist within and in part of large environment. The organisation it sect consist of numerous sub-component, all of which interact in pursuing the organisational goal.
Controlling: Controlling is defined as the process by which management ensures that actual activities conform to plan activities, in order words controlling could be seen as a means whereby actual activities are constant with plan.
Co-ordinating: Co-ordinating simply mean achieving individual harmony of individual effort to towards the accomplishment of the organisational goal. It can also be defined or referred to as the activities that bind together all individual efforts and direct them towards a common objectives.
Public: The word public is associated with anything that has to do with the generality of the people in a society. It is also associated with government public properly is government property and thus it is every body’s property.
Modern: Modern could be referred to as something new or new ways of doing things.
Development: Development can be defined as and upward directional movement of society from lesser to greater levels of energy, quality, creativity. mastery, complexity etc.
Personnel: Personnel could be seen as the people who are employed in an organisation. Personnel management deal with developing and utilizing personnel working for and within an organisation in the best possible way to enable the organisation extract the full potential of the employees and achieve it objective and target.
