DESIGN OF A COMPUTERIZED SYSTEM FOR DEPARTMENTAL STUDENT RESULT PROCESSING
ABSTRACT

This work computerized students departmental result processing system provides certain information like how to process students scores and grade point average, courses and their credit loads and theoretical and practically information in computer science department of I.M.T for students and lecturers.
This work acquaints students and lecturers in the department on how easy and fast an automated system in result processing can be in accessing students records and computing student grades and scores.
The work assumed students and lecturers have learnt how to compute grades, GPA and CGPA though it treats these but not concisely the result processing unit staff won’t find it difficult in manipulating the package if they have learnt the basic operations of computer and windows packages.
It aims at reducing the stress in student result processing using the manual system and saves the student problems like missing scores or incorrect scores and grades or incorrect grades point averages which are detriment to student’s success in the institution.
ORGANIZATION OF WORK
This research work is organized in seven chapters, chapter 1, highlights the purpose, aims and objectives of the study, statement of the problem, scope and limitations of the study, assumption and definition of terms related to the research topic.
Chapter 2, discusses on the review of related literature and notes made by same prominent people in the field which were gathered from the NET.
Chapter 3, describes and analysis the existing system together with the fact finding methods used, organization structure, objectives of the existing system, the input, process and output analysis, outstanding performance, problems of  the existing system and the solutions to the where the problems facing the existing (manual) system.
Chapter 4, deals on the design of the new system facts about the present system and also the new structure that is needed to enhance the new system.
Furthermore, file structure is designed which append record, update records, delete and print output.
Chapter 5, describe the programming phase and objectives, what should be the system’s input so it can economically and reliably perform its designated task.
Chapter 6, describes the overall achievement of the project and other things that has to be implemented in enhancing the growth of the new system.
Chapter 7, presents recommendation made and conclusion of the work.

 INTRODUCTION
In our society today, the dependence on automated systems and their uses are really appreciated due to their enormous advantages. Virtually all types of computation and analyses are done easily and timely using an automated system. The list cannot be over emphasized by one of them is student result processing system in departments of every academic institution.
Result processing is a task that must be carried out accurately and thus should not be done manually to avoid loss in filling decoration and computations.
This has promoted the need for a computerized database management system for computation and result processing.
Obviously this will positively affect the release of results and improve the grading system to its standard. Hence the improvement of performance in the processing of students in the computer department is what this project work is all about.
 1.1       STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The problem of the study is to design and implement a computerized student departmental result processing with computer science department of the Institute of Management and Technology as its case study.
This study was embarked upon to critically exhaust the subject matte.
The content and organization of the database must be geared towards the users information needs.
Although these are different objective and opinions about what constitutes a database system, the most important is that such systems are designed around a centralized and integrated database that emphasizes the independence of program and data.
This projects deals with the subject matter “ student departmental result processing system” using Basic Language.
 1.2       PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The purpose of the study hovers around identifying all the problems associated with the manual record/storage and retrieval during result processing in the department.
And to convince the departments on the need to implement the computerized system of result processing and grading thereby finally eliminating all those problems wherent in the existing manual system.
 1.3       SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The study amongst its numerous benefits will produce computer program which will be used in students result processing and record handling. Therefore the package will be meant for easy and timely accurate students result computation and grading in the department. It saves a lot o time when refreshing information.
This program lays credit to the relevance of the computer and its accessories as opposed. By the manual method used in the existing system.
The package will be of very good use to all lecturers and to the result processing staff for easy and efficient processing of students records and results. Moreso, the research work will serve as a reference material for further research work.
 1.4       SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The scope of this work is bounded by the computer science department of I.M.T. Enugu, but can be used as a guide to develop more broad project of the like of result processing system for I.M.T Exams/Records department.
 1.5       AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
The aims and objective of the new system are to:
1.                  To enhance result processing standard in the department.
2.                  Provide an up to date record of information about students.
3.                  Automate the grading system and computation of results to reduce time lag and improve accuracy.
4.                  Provide an accurate, reliable and desired information for processing of results and validates the input to the system to reduce errors.
5.                  For the purpose of record keeping and easy access to records as at and when due.
