EFFECT OF OVER POPLATION ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS IN COLLEGE OF EDUCATION EKIADOLOR BENIN ABSTRACT This project is directed to find out the effect of over population on the academic performance of the students. This work is divided into five chapters. According to the project, its first chapter deals with the introduction here the history of the College and definition of over population is given. It also deals with the problem of the study and its significance. Chapter two is concerned with literature review. Chapter three contains method and administration of questionnaires, which was collected and interested. Chapter four involves presentation of data and discussion. It was observed that more than half of the students have been affected in one way or the other due to the over populated situation in the College of Education Benin. Chapter five looks into finding solution by making recommendation to the appropriate channels. It is the only college of it kind in the state presently. The college was founded in 1977 as an audience college for training of NCE teachers and was located temporarily at Iyaro, Benin City Edo State it was formally opened on the 5th of May 1980 and renamed college of Education Benin and was moved to its permanent site at Ekiadolor in April 1980. it operated the session system which has two semesters. It is headed by the provost who is the executive officer. Today, the school has improved considerably and the population has raised to about seven thousand under the administration of the Provost, Professor Victor Amen Uhunmwangho. The college has really excelled in producing students of high excellent ability compared to other colleges and even when the students gain admission into the university, they perform excellently well. Inspite of the good condition of the college, it is said to know that the students academic performance is not encouraging and many reasons are advanced to have been responsible for this. It is really an established fact that over population distorts effective learning and good management of any school. The rise in the population growth in the department of economics social studies has really affected the learning process of students because of the inadequate facilities which includes classroom. This has resulted in poor performance in academic work and the poor collection of student’s results, in the sense that many of the students are faced with blank results and the one third of this department may also have been affected with carry over in some of their courses. OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY The investigation is therefore aimed at finding out the causes and effects of over population in the department of economics social studies, college of education Ekiadolor. 1. What can be the causes of over population in the college of education Ekiadolor Benin? 2. What are the effects of over population? 3. There is breakdown of communication in the class. 4. There is over utilization of facilities. 5. Due to method use in teaching the students by the lecturers are simple. 6. To know the communication diseases transferred. 7. Students wanting to offer easy course in order to get high grade. STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Seeing the growth rate of the department to be compared to its facility, one of the tempted to ask what brought about the over population in the department of economic social studies to be compared to other departments with in the college. Base on this growth rate, if within three years (3) years, the population has risen to such that can be compared with the level of its growth in the past yeas, one would not be too serious in finding out the problems of poor academic performance lack of accommodation, indiscipline, poor classroom management e.t.c that is so pronounced in the college today. RESEARCH QUESTION The following of this study, the following research questions have been designed. 1. Can communication diseases be transferred in a large class? 2. Does effective learning takes place in a large class? 3. Does over population strengthen good communication in the college? 4. Can it lead to shortage of facilities? 5. Does it lead to over utilization of the available facilities and man power? 6. Can poor academic performance be an effect of over population? 7. Does under standardized admission process be seen as the cause of over population in the college of education Ekiadolor Benin? SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY Since the study was carried out to know the effects of over population of the academic performance of students in the college, it will help the school administrators and government to find last solutions to this effect. Thus ensuring the necessary peace on the campus with which learning can take place effectively. If the effects of over population is been examined based on the academic performance of students within the college, recommendation will be made to the appropriate authorities. DEFINITION OF TERMS The researcher will try as much as possible to define the terms and abbreviation used in this study. The following terms used in the project are defined thus; Population: this means the total number of people living in a geographical area. Utilization: to utilize means to use something especially for a practical purpose. Strengthen: this concept means to become stronger. Communication: it is the process of expressing ideas, feeling from one destination to the other. Investigation: this concept is used in this research work as an official examination of the acts about a situation. Distorts: this means to change facts ideas so that they will be no longer correct. Administration: this means the activities that are done in order to plan schools or other institutions. Inadequate: this word is used in this project because it means not good enough or not able to deal with situation.
