   ABSTRACT

Nowadays, there is an increase in the demand to connect to the internal networks of organizations by their branches from distant locations. Members of such organizations often need to access internal networks from their homes, hotels or other far away business places and external networks over the internet which is insecure by virtue of its public nature.

The security of information transferred in the network becomes a major challenge when staff or partners in business access internal networks from external locations constantly, hence the need for vpn security arises.

Virtual private networking (VPN) technology provides a means of shielding information shared over the internet by letting users establish a virtual private tunnel through which an internal network is entered securely, accessing data, communications and other resources through a rather insecure network ( and in this case, it is the public internet).

This project provides an analysis comparing the performance of an internet network with VPN and Normal internet network without VPN over an enterprise with branches located in three different geographical areas. The potential information security risks is discussed as well as the considerations that need to be taken into account when designing virtual private network over three sites.
