ABSTRACT

This study is on investigation of the problems facing teaching of commerce in senior secondary schools in Ekiti State. The purpose of the study is to ascertain the teacher’s qualification's in the teaching of commerce in senior secondary schools, to find out whether commerce teachers have relevant instructional materials and facilities in senior secondary schools and also to examine the kind of teaching methodology used to teach commerce in senior secondary schools in Ekiti State.

          The study adopted a descriptive research design. The sample for the study consists of 100 students randomly selected from five senior secondary schools offering commerce as a subject in Ekiti State. The method of selection is the random sampling techniques were, twenty students make up of ten males and ten females from each of the schools. The instrument used for this study is a self-developed questionnaire. The face and content validity of the instrument was ascertained by the supervisor and other experts. The data collected were analyzed using frequency count percentage and Chi-square.

The findings revealed that the level of teacher’s qualification contributes to commerce teaching effectiveness. It was also discovered that instructional materials will enhance the teaching and learning process and facilitates the retention of the students especially in commerce.

The study recommends that qualified teachers should be employed to teach commerce in senior secondary schools, relevant instructional materials for effective teaching of commerce should be provided and used to teach the students, the school environment should be conducive for teaching and learning of commerce and the school administrator should ensure that the appropriate teaching method is used to teach commerce in Senior Secondary Schools in Ekiti state.
