ABSTRACT
Road traffic crashes are major global problem that has led to loss of lives and increase in travel time by motorist. Against this background, the vehicular crashes were assessed on selected arterial roads in Niger State. The locus map was used to map the arterial roads under study (Minna- Suleja road and Minna – Bida road). In achieving the aim, the following objectives were address; mapped out the various locations of vehicular crashes hot spots, establish factors responsible for the crashes, map out the existing condition of the routes and compute the severity index of vehicular crashes on the arterial routes between 2010 – 2017. The domino theory served as the basis for this study. The locus map was used an oral interview was also conducted to get the perception of road users on factors seems to be responsible for road crashes along the routes. While data on road crashes were collected and complied from the FRSC and dailies. Data were presented and analyzed using descriptive and geographic information system. The result revealed that the severity of crash was high in 2011 along Minna – Suleja road while it was high in 2017 along Minna – Bida road, and 70% portions of the two roads under study were in deplorable state, the portions termed to be deplorable are refers as portion with potholes and washed out tarred surface of the road, the existing condition of the road as massively contributed to road crashes along the routes and this was find affirmed by the FRSC Minna, Office, and 17 factors were adjudged by FRSC Minna, Office to be responsible for road traffic crash along the routes under study, the factors highlighted were SPV, LOC, TBT, DGD, WOV, DAD, DOT, BFL, OBS, LSV, BRD, MDV, UPWD, and SLV. While the result of the oral interview revealed 3 factors such as bad road, negligence and over speeding to be responsible for road traffic crash along the routes. The research concluded that the deplorable state of the two roads under the study Minna – Bida road and Minna – Suleja road has increased the rate of road traffic crash along the routes and as recorded the highest crash in the State between 2010 to 2017, it there by recommended that Federal Government and Niger State Government should make adequate funds available for regular and periodic maintenance of the roads and respective agencies on road should establish road education to road users (particularly the commercial drivers) on the important of road sign and speed limit to reduce the occurrence of crash in the State.
