The study assessed rural youth migration in Ovia north east local government area of Edo State. This study specifically described socio-economic characteristics of rural households obtained, information on migrant youth, examined the level of youth participation in agricultural and rural development activities and the effect of youth migration on these activities in the study area between 2012 2017.

A two stage sampling procedure was used to select eighty (80) respondents who were household heads. Questionnaire was the main instrument for data collection and was administered to respondents. The collected data were analysed descriptively and presented in frequency counts and simple percentages.

The hypothesis was tested using Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC).

Findings from the study shows that a majority of household heads in the study area were males (52.5%), married ( 70%), farmers (62.5%), and had primary school education (55%).

Unemployment was the major cause of rural youth migration, (57.5%) and over three hundred youth migrated in search of employment in the last 5 years from the study area. The level of youth participation in agricultural and rural development activities is high in bush clearing ( mean score = 2.94), and vigilante group ( mean score = 2.55). The effect of rural youth migration on agricultural and rural livelihood activities is very serious in bush clearing ( mean score = 3.74), and festival ( mean score = 3.40).

The following can be concluded from the research that youth who contribute immensely to agricultural production and rural development activities are migrating to urban centers in search of employment other than agriculture and these is a problem to agricultural development. The study recommends that incentives be provided for youth to encourage their continuous participation in agriculture.

Government and non-governmental organizations should invest in agriculture in rural areas.
