1.0 Introduction and Background
The researcher was interested in and carrying out a case study on the causes of primary school drop out in Diani zone in Msambweni district . The residents of this location were subsistence farmers and depends on coconuts and cashew nuts as their main cash crop. Other major economic activities of the people are fishing, quarrying and tourism. For the last few decades, the primary school enrollment has continued to decline. Despite tireless efforts by the government and non-government organizations (NGO's) in imparting knowledge to the younger generation, still their percentage of illiteracy is remarkable.
