ABSTRACT

The study looked at assessing the performance of girl child education in selected secondary schools in central division Kitui district. There are direct and opportunity costs of education which have strong negative effects on female educational opportunities. The purpose of this study was to assess the factors influencing perfmmance of girl child education in relation to access, participation and completion rates in central division Kitui district. The objectives of the study were be to; dete1mine the influence of socio-economic factors such as poverty, direct and opportunity costs of schooling on girl child education performance. Analyze the effect of geographical location of a school to girl child perfmmance in education. Analyze the effect of influence of socio-cultural factors such as early marriages and priority given to girls' future roles as mothers on girl child education performance. Analyze the influence of school factors such as exclusion, avoidance and maginalization on girl child perfmmance in education. Determine the influence of political factors such as inadequate public support and unclear policies on girl child performance and suggest promising interventions to promote female education. The study sought to bring out the current state of knowledge on the socio-economic, socio-cultural, school and political factors influencing female participation in education. The study adopted a survey research method. target population was 246 teachers, and 1487 students (DEO' S staff records for secondary schools Kitui District, 2008). The sample included all the 25 headteachers and 150 students. The researcher used questionnaires to collect data. Both qualitative analyses descriptive statistics involving tabulations, graphs and percentages was used to analyze the data. The findings were presented in terms of tables and charts and discussions of the findings after every pictorial presentation. A sUlllffiary, conclusion and recommendations with suggestion for further diagnostic research were made.
