ABSTRACT

This study examined the role of money deposit banks in financing agricultural project in Enugu Metropolis. It emphasizes the need to promote agricultural production to improve the standard of living and reduce the unguided population explosion which is in geometrical progression (G.P) while agricultural product was only growing in an arithmetical progression.  The researcher made use of both primary and secondary sources of data collection.  The researcher utilizes questionnaires and oral interviews as primary sources of data. Moreso, pertinent relevant literatures and text books served as secondary sources of data. The population of the study was fifty seven (57) both farmers and bankers.  In organizing and presenting data collected, tables, frequencies and percentages were used to analyze the data.  Based on the analysis, the following findings were made: firstly, farmer complained of not receiving attention promptly from banks.  The bankers also complained of inadequate collateral.  It was also discovered that the money collected from the money deposit banks is not channeled to the production of farm products.  In other words, they (farmers) use the money to attend to other personal needs, thus, making the bankers reluctant.  Based on the following findings, the researcher recommended that banks should seize the opportunity of their presence in the rural areas to identify genuine farmers, employing more agricultural officers will eliminate the problem of inadequate supervision of on going  projects. Efforts should be made to give loans worth at least N50,000 to peasant farmers without requesting for much security etc. At the end of the research, it revealed that the task facing money deposit banks in financing agricultural project is made more difficult by the farmers themselves.
