ABSTRACT

This research work is aimed at investigating the impact of planning and control as a management function on the survival of small scale business in Benin City, Edo state.

Descriptive survey was adopted for this research. Primary source of data collection was utilized and a total of 100 questionnaires was sampled and, used for this research. Descriptive statistics using SPSS was used to analyse the data from the questionnaire.

The result from the study showed that proper planning and control is a major problem facing small scale businesses as it can make them thrive even in harsh economic condition and contributes immensely to the economic growth and development of Nigeria. Planning and control also gives focus and direction to small scale business as this is important in driving home the potentials of small scale business in contributing to the development of the nation. It was recommended that symposia and Training with modern training approach should be organised by the government on effective planning and control to increase the management skills of small scale business owners in Nigeria. In designing programmes that are meant to boost small scale business performance in Nigeria, the government should endeavour to include the owners of small scale businesses in formulation of policies and the design of programmes that affect them. Government should empower financial institutions to be able to provide funds and mentorship platforms for small scale business owners in the country.
