Abstract

This project outlines the structural design of eight-storey reinforced concrete hostel building following British standard, BS: 8110, part 1, 1997 “Structural use of Concrete”. The project aimed at producing structural design of eight storey hostel. The research was achieved based on the objectives of; developing structural layout from the architectural drawings; analyzing and designing the structural elements with some degree of economic consideration and producing the structural drawings of the designed elements. Computer software based approach was used to carry out the design. Civil and structural computing (CSC)/Orion 18 and AutoCAD software were used for the analysis, design and detailing of the structural drawing result and a flat slab method was adopted due to its simplified formwork and absence of beams that obstruct the light and circulation of air which makes it more economical. The results obtained from the design include several number of piles which comprise of nine different pile caps, BTA, BTB, BTC, BTD, BTE, BTF, BTG, BTH and BTI of sizes; 1300×1650×400mm, 1300×2350×400mm, 1100×2100×400mm, 1300x1300x400mm e. t. c. The results also comprise of several number of columns, beams and slabs of various sizes. The study concludes that, the reinforcement details comply with the recommendations in BS8110-1997 and that, the designed structure will be adequate enough to serve its design purpose and perform satisfactorily all through its intended life span. Therefore, designers are recommended to be well acquainted with the software and to apply caution when inputting data so as to avoid mistakes.
