CAUSES, CHALLENGES AND SOLUTION TO CORRUPTION IN NIGERIA (QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS)

CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Corruption is now a plague affecting Nigeria; it increases in accordance to the growth of the nation. There have been so many fight and demonstration to eradicate corruption in Nigeria but it looks as if the more protest Nigerian makes the more the level of corruption continue to increase in Nigeria; the major causes of corruption in Nigeria could be as a result of low standard of living in Nigeria; the level of greed among the people of Nigeria also have significant effect on the level of corruption in Nigeria.

Corruption could be the major cause of crises in Nigeria; such crises include terrorist attacks (Boko haram); most of these terrorist are from a very poor background; you imagine a poor man being offered a huge amount of money to drop an explosive in a particular area of Nigeria; such a man cannot resist such offer. The destruction of infrastructures by the terrorist attacks increases the level of poverty in Nigeria; take for instance the attack on churches and other business area of Kaduna in the month of june 2012; properties were destroyed, families were homeless; it became difficult for them to afford one meal a day.

Another major cause of corruption in Nigeria is greed among the people of Nigeria; everybody dreams of a good and healthy life; you know you can only enjoy such luxury when you are well to do; this have a negative effect on the mindset of most people especially those in the federal government parastatals of Nigeria.

The fight against corruption seems an endless fight; the more effort the federal government of Nigeria put in to eradicate corruption the more the level of corruption continue to wax stronger.

Up till date; Nigeria is still recovering the money looted by the former president of Nigeria; General Sani Abacha. The former governor of Benue state was caught by the EFCC of Nigeria with huge amount of money which he claimed to be the money set aside for the purchase of foreign pigs for the agricultural development of Benue state.

When the leaders are corrupt, how can the people looking up to them be accountable? The fight and protest for the eradication of corruption should start from the leaders of Nigeria.

The research work will make use of ordinary least square regression method to investigate the relationship between the level of corruption and the economic growth and development of Nigeria.

1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The problem of corruption in Nigeria has being a major issue; the federal government of Nigeria has put so much resources to eradicate the effect of corruption in Nigeria, the level of poverty in Nigeria is on the high side because of the increase in the level of crises and terrorist attacks in Nigeria. The federal government is in continuous search for the solution to completely eradicate corruption in Nigeria.

1.3 RESEARCH QUESTION

1. What are the major causes of corruption in Nigeria?

2. Are there any challenges facing the federal government of Nigeria in the eradication of corruption in Nigeria?

3. What are the best ways to resolve the issue of corruption in Nigeria?

4. Is there any relationship between greed and the level of corruption in Nigeria?

1.4 RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS

H0: there is no significant relationship between corruption index (CORI) and the gross domestic product of Nigeria (GDP)

H1: there is no significant relationship between corruption index (CORI) and the gross domestic product of Nigeria (GDP).

H0: Corruption index (CORI) and jobless rate (JOBR) have no significant effect on the gross domestic product of Nigeria (GDP).

H1: Corruption index (CORI)and jobless rate (JOBR) have significant effect on the gross domestic product of Nigeria (GDP).

1.5 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF STUDY

The aim of the research work is to:

 1. Determine the major causes of corruption in Nigeria.

2. Determine the challenges facing the federal government of Nigeria in the eradication of corruption in Nigeria.

3. The best ways to resolve the issue of corruption in Nigeria.

4. The relationship between greed and the level of corruption in Nigeria.

1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

The research work is a very important one as it will assist the federal government of Nigeria in the eradication of corruption in Nigeria; it will discuss the major cause of corruption in Nigeria.

The model and the concept of corruption in Nigeria shall be discuss in the research work.

1.7 SCOPE OF STUDY

The research work the causes, challenges and solution of corruption in Nigeria should be the primary focus of the study; the study will cover the areas of corruption through its history, causes and challenges in the eradication of corruption in Nigeria.

1.8 LIMITATION OF STUDY

1.8.1 FINANCIAL CONSTRAINTS: due to insufficient funds, the researcher was unable to get all the materials needed for the research work; the causes, challenges and solution to corruption in Nigeria but the researcher was able to get all the information needed for the purpose of the study.

1.8.2 TIME CONSTRAINTS: The researcher was involve in other departmental activities like assignments, seminars etc. but the researcher was able to meet up with the time scheduled for the presentation of the research work.

1.9 DEFINITION OF TERMS

CORRUPTION: is a form of dishonest or unethical conduct by a person entrusted with a position of authority, often to acquire personal benefit. Corruption may include many activities including bribery and embezzlement, though it may also involve practices that are legal in Nigeria.
