ABSTRACT

This study looked at the influence of parental attitude on pupils’ school readiness of Bariga Council Development Area of Lagos State Constituency. The specific objectives are to examine the demographic profile of parents in this study, to investigate forms of parental attitudes and their effects on the child readiness, to assess various forms of parental involvement on children’s school readiness, to determine whether or not the number of children in the family has effect on the child’s readiness for school and to investigate the effect of parents’ socio-economic status on child’s readiness to school. The population of study comprised of all Parents in Bariga Council Development Area of Lagos States. Sample random sampling technique was adopted in selecting the respondents to make up the total of the sample size and the researcher made use of one hundred (100) questionnaires to analysis the data using Simple percentage statistics. Findings revealed that there is no significant relationship between parental involvement and children’s school readiness. The results of the analysis showed the parental attitude could influence academic readiness and achievement among pupils in primary schools. Therefore, it was recommended that parents should endeavour to improve on their relationship with their children. Also it was recommended that they should encourage, stimulate and entertain questions of all sorts. Also the school workers should have a better knowledge of the home problems of the pupils and this should lead to a closer co-operation. Home training and school training should properly complement each other. And lastly parents should also encourage their children to discuss freely with them; an atmosphere of freedom and friendliness should be created.
