ABSTRACT

The major objective was to examine the causes of pupils' school drop outs in Bukoba district. The study was conducted in Bukoba district, Kagera region; students, community members, teaching staff, and political leaders from the two parishes of were involved in the study. A total of60 (sixty) participants, 10 students, 10 political leaders, 10 teachers, and 30 community leaders were involved in the study. The study used both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. The causes of pupils school drop outs in secondary schools in Bukoba district included; poverty with 35%, corporal punishments with 20%, chronic sickness with 21.6%, long distance of schools with 13.3%, and lengthy learning hours with 10% The effects of pupils' school drop outs in secondary schools in Bukoba district included; high crime rates with 31.6%, high illiteracy levels with 23.3%, early marriages with 21.6%, early pregnancies with 21.6%. The solutions to the problems of students' school drop outs in Bukoba district included; build more schools with 21.6%, free education with 28.33, compulsory education with 18.3%, provision of lunch in schools with 20%, reduction of learning hours with 11.6%. Conclusions and recommendations were then made after presenting and interpreting the data.
