ABSTRACT

This research was on an investigation into the academic under performance encountered by leafing Impaired learners in special schools and units in the Coast Province of Kenya. The staternent of the problem was the growing concern of academic under performance of learning Impaired learners in special schools and units in the province, prompting the investigation to find a solution to help improve performance to conduct the study, the researcher used a survey method of research design targeting all schools and teachers of the hearing impairment in the Coast Province of Kenya, but represented by 50 teachers from schools and units around Kwale,Taita Taveta, Mombasa and Kilifi Districts through personal delivery of the questionnaires or the researchers appointed representatives. The researcher used questionnaires for data collection, having selected respondents through random picking using a lottery system which did not favour any teacher respondents).some of the key findings were that most learners were not competent in reading kills, mathematics or composition writing. There was an alarming shortage of teaching and learning resources in most schools;some of the key conclusions were that most schools had inadequate teaching and learning resources, inadequate teaching personnel and incompetent signing knowledge. The amount of time allocated for different papers in the National Examination was also too short. These problems had serious implications on learners, learning and development ; for example with shortage of teachers ,those teaching were overworked. While lack of resources meant most teachers taught theoretically, this implies they couldn’t explain abstract concepts. Among the recommendations were that provision of teaching and learning resources should be done, while all personnel dealing with RI learners should be specially trained. It is also important to promote inclusive education in schools. The examination times for papers, should be increased for learners to be able to complete examination papers and have time to go through their written work before handing over
