ABSTRACT.
This research work is centred on Law as it Were: the Place of Social and Moral Value in Contemporary Nigeria. The Law is as old as the creation of man and all of God’s creatures. He made Law to ensure the Harmony and Peaceful co-existence among his Creatures. By his Laws, He defined the limit for man.
Law in any Society is as old as the society itself. This is because when a Society or Community is formed, Laws are usually put in place to ensure the Continuity of that Society or Community. Every Society, State, Nation or Community has its peculiar Legal history. This work will seek to expose some of them.
Foreign Laws like English Laws, Islamic Law, in the Northern part of Nigeria and Customs in Southern states Influenced by Local Customs and Common Law of England largely influenced the Nigerian Legal History.
Morality on the other hand is basically a matter of value Judgement of what is good or bad, right or wrong in man’s conduct or behaviour as viewed by the generality of the public or as determined by the Holy Bible, Koran or other Holy Scriptures and Natural Law theorists.
The Hebrew were of the view that any law void of morality principle as contained in the Ten Commandments in the Bible, is invalid and should not be obeyed. But the Greek were of the view that, a law whether or not it has moral content should be obeyed. To this end, law is a social necessity for upholding social and moral value in Contemporary Nigeria without which many things will go wrong in the Society.
