ABSTRACT

This study sought to identify barriers of utilization of research findings by registered nurses practicing in Bingham University Teaching Hospital, Jos. Among the specific purpose of the study were to identify common research findings used in the hospital by nurses, barriers of utilization of research findings and strategies to be used for effective utilization of research findings by nurses in the hospital. The adopted design was a descriptive research design. The study was carried out in Bingham University Teaching Hospital, Jos. The population of the study consisted of 60 respondents made up of 24 Registered Nurses/Midwives, 20 senior Nursing Officers, 10 Assisting Nursing Officers, and 6 Nurses having other ranks higher than the assistant nursing officers. The instrument was face and content validated by the supervisor and other nurse educators. Due to the population, no test was carried out. Data for the study were personally collected by the researcher and mean statistics was employed to answer research question 1 – 4. Based on the findings of the research, the following recommendation were made: the government should provide grant and resources, information from nursing research committee about findings should be made available, hospital management should encourage use through incentives and promotions, improve access to Evidence – Based resource and greater autonomy, physicians should support use and research should be included in training of nurses.
