ABSTRACT
This study investigated the causes and consequences of mass failure of students in mathematics in senior secondary schools in Gwagwalada Area Council of FCT, Abuja. The study adopted a simple survey research design. Study population comprised all the senior secondary schools in Gwagwalada Area Council. A sample of four (4) schools was drawn from the population through the process of simple random sampling technique. An inventory schedule was the instrument used for data collection. A total of 140 questionnaires, 35 questionnaires per school were administered. 140 (100%) questionnaires were returned under close supervision. The responses were analyzed through content analysis. Simple percentage method was used to analyze the data gathered in form of tables in rows and columns. Findings revealed that teachers, students, parents, schools and government were the factors that are responsible for mass failure of students in mathematics. The result of the study also showed that drop-out of students from school among others is a consequence of mass failure. To curb the menace of mass failure in mathematics, it was recommended among others that, professional bodies in education should organize mathematical related workshops to enlighten students and teachers on the importance of mathematics to the society.
