                                                                   ABSTRACT

Today, the advancements in the field of communication technology created a world with no boundary or limitations. We have witnessed the immense power of the internet and social networking sites are redefining the field of communication, which in conjunction with other communication media and technology, turned the world into a global village, thereby, diffusing both time and space. Over the past two decades, studies have shown an overall increase in the number of portrayals of and the amount of discussion about sex in these social media and an increase in the explicitness of these portrayals. Little is known, however, of the relationship between the social media and young people’s sexual behavior in Nigeria, because of the dearth of studies in this area. Recent research on youth sexual behaviour reveals that access to social networks is associated with health risk taking behaviours among. Most of the social networks that students are exposed to include sexual imagery but rarely portray consequences of risky sexual encounters or healthy sexual messages. In view of this background, this study analyzes the influence of social media utilization on sexual behaviour of private secondary school students in Kaduna South Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The researcher adopted a survey research design. A total of one hundred and fifty (150) respondents comprised the target of the study. Questionnaire and was the instrument used for data collection. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), frequency tables and percentages (%) were employed in the data analysis. It was discovered that Peer group pressure, personal interest in learning about relationship norms, societal permissive sexual attitudes and lack of parental care and parental neglect are reasons why students view and visit sexually explicit material on social media. Most of the respondents have access to social media through their mobile through which they access sexually explicit materials. However social networking site did not influenced most of their sexual behaviour. Sexual predation by adults, both online and offline remains a concern as social networks is associated with health risk taking behaviours among youth and teens get away with posting nude images. Furthermore, Social media has become pervasive, impacting the social fabric of our society and changing the nature of social relationships as most respondents stated that visiting sexually explicit material on social media should be considered as immoral.
