Abstract
This study examined the “utilization of private school libraries by teachers and students in sabon gari local government area of Kaduna State” Nigeria. It identifies the concepts of private school library, the extent of availability of private school libraries; it also identified the types of Resources and Services Provided by Private School libraries, the utilization of private school libraries and the hindrances to utilization of private school libraries. The study adopted the survey research design, in a survey method; questionnaires are the main instrument for data collection. Frequency, tables, percentages are the main tools used for data analysis. Results of the analysis showed that 20-30% is the rate in percentage of availability of school libraries in private schools in Sabon Gari Local government area in Kaduna state. And that all private schools in sabon gari local government area of Kaduna state do not have libraries. It was also discovered that computer services, internet services, guidance and counselling services and to supply creative materials are the services rendered in private school libraries in sabon gari local government area of Kaduna state, and that the resources available in private school libraries in sabon gari local government area in Kaduna State are; DVD books and Books on tapes. The extent of utilization of private school libraries by both teachers and students is just sometimes. Hindrances to the Use of private school libraries includes; Inadequacy in library opening hours, school librarians are not friendly and there are too many regulations and rules governing the school library, and recommendation were given. Some of these recommendations are: More private school libraries should be established in private schools to enhance teaching and learning thereby increasing students’ performance. The available libraries should be well stocked with current and relevant resources in addition to what is attainable in the libraries to enhance teaching, learning experience. The students, even the teachers should be encouraged to make good use of the libraries always by the incorporation of library periods on the time table. Projects, class works that encourages the students to make good use of the library should be given to the students by their teachers in other for the students to make good utilization of the library resources and services always.
