ABSTRACT
This research work examines the effects of some factors influencing Hypertension, and the data used was obtained from the case-hypertensive patients’ record at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (2007 - 2012). Basically, the target of this research are patients of infections/diseases (e. g. HIV/AIDS) that later developed hypertension. The Pearson’s Chi-square test statistic – testing for independence, the Odds ratio, Relative risk and Pearson’s product moment correlation coefficient – measuring association, and the Z-test statistic –testing for proportion, were used in this research. From the analysis of data, the findings were that: outcome (that is, death or survival of hypertensive patients) is independent of age, gender, length of stay of patients in the hospital, and initial health status – Diabetes, Renal failure and Tuberculosis; outcome however, depends on years under study and initial health status – HIV/AIDS and other Diagnosis; and lastly, the proportion of survival for HIV/AIDS-hypertensive patients and non-HIV/AIDS-hypertensive patients differs as well as that of Other-Diagnosis-hypertensive patients.
