ABSTRACT

The Kenya government through Free Primary Education (FPE) has provided teaching/learning resources (curriculum guide, course books, reference books, teachers' guides, relevant materials and equipment) to enhance teaching and learning in all public schools. In many ECDE centres, these materials are scarce if any. This study sought to determine the effects of teaching/learning materials on the academic performance among ECDE learners in Mau-Narok Zone, Molo district. Data was collected through a survey using a sample of 24 ECDE teachers selected from 6 randomly selected public primary schools in Mau-Narok zone. Structured questionnaires were used to collect primary data and secondary data was gathered from relevant records. Data was analyzed descriptively and findings presented using frequency tables, graphs and pie charts. The key study findings are as follows:- (I) FPE has led to high enrolment rates especially among ECDE learners (2) There is improved supply of textbook but other teaching/learning material (plant/animal charts, picture/photographs, radio/tape-recorders/TV and classroom shop) are inadequate in most schools (3) Supplies of writing materials (books & Pens) have steadily improved but not sufficient. (4) Library facilities are available but utilization still very low. (5) The academic performance of schools has generally either not changed or dropped attributed to high emolments, teacher shortage and inadequate teaching/learning materials. The study recommends that: (I) Ministry or Education should employ more teachers to alleviate the shortage. (2) Funds allocate for per capita teaching/learning materials should be increased in proportional to pupil enrolment. ( 4) The FPE programme funds should be scaled up to cover provision of school facilities such as classrooms & desks. (5) Campaigns should be carried out to sensitize all stakeholders in education (parents, teachers & private sector) on their roles in provision of improving the teaching/learning environment in schools.
