ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to investigate the academic performance of
children living with single parents in Mwingi Central, Mwingi District Kenya.
Specific Objectives of the study were: (1) To investigate the relationship
between children living with single parents and poor performance, (2)
Investigate the relationship between children living with single parents and
emotional stress, (3) Investigate the relationship between children living with
single parents and dropping out of school and (4) Investigate the relationship
between children living with single parents and delinquent behavior.
The methods used for data collection were questionnaires to the teachers and
focus group discussions with the parents.
The findings revealed that children from single parent families were likely to
drop out of school, perform poorly in school, have emotional stress and involve
in delinquent behaviors.
The study recommended: that:
The government and policy makers should take into consideration the
problems of children living with single parents.
The single parents should also be counseled on social needs of their children so
that their academic work will not suffer at school. Children and their parents should be counseled together to help both the child and the parent.
