Abstract

This study is on the attitudes of parents towards the immunization of their children against poliomyelitis in Sabon Gari Local Government Area of Zaria Metropolis, Kaduna State. The study adopted a survey design, and questionnaire was the instrument used for the study. The population sample consisted of 190 volunteered respondents; averaged mean was used to analyze the data that emanated from the study. The finding of the study reveals that aware of common childhood illness and their preventive measures (x=1.14), immunize my children against infectious disease (x=1.32), believe that immunization of children help to stop poliomyelitis (x=1.49) were the attitudes of parents towards the immunization of their children against poliomyelitis. Children that are vaccinated still have poliomyelitis (x=3.28), use of vaccine is contrary to religion (x=3.28), culture and tradition forbids the use of vaccine for children (x=3.32) were the health and cultural problems associated with immunization of children against poliomyelitis. Immunization agents do not visit certain areas as other places (x=2.42), children that have been immunized are not infected with poliomyelitis (x=1.86), the polio vaccine used provides long term immunity against the polio virus (x=1.69) were the effectiveness of immunization of children against poliomyelitis. Based on these results and many more, the following recommendations were stated; (a)since parents are now aware of the advantage of immunizing their children against polio, it is recommended that local government health department can now educate the public on the importance of immunization against the six killer diseases generally. (b) The result of the study shows that the use of vaccine is not against the religion and culture of parents, therefore, the local government health department should work hand in hand with the religious and traditional leaders to expand the immunization drive in the communities of their local areas. (c)The result that parents prefer the oral polio vaccine than the inactivated polio vaccine which required injection, it is recommended that community health workers should make use of the oral polio vaccine since it is more preferable by the community.
